Ten years since Voyager's triumphant returned home from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation finds itself with a supply crisis, isolated planets, and more!

This is not random and natural.  Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager's former security chief and current head of the new Section 31.  Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew!  These are mostly outcasts, rogues, and even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what is causing the folding of time and space, and stopping it.  At all costs.

Will they be able to put aside their differences, and stop trying to kill one another in time to accomplish their mission?

Renegades, as the name suggests, will be bold, edgy and a little dark. Renegades will feature a combination of familiar Star Trek faces, plus a collection of hot, new rising actors.

It will be a departure from previous Treks by delving into the dark side of the human psyche, pushing our heroes to their limits, forcing them to carry out actions that they never would have as Starfleet officers.

Star Trek: Renegades will be action oriented, filled with suspense and espionage. All while exploring new worlds, encountering both familiar and new alien species, and boldly going where no Trek has gone before.

Vega Conflict Review

Kixeye's VEGA Conflict has been out for some time on iTunes, Android, and desktop. It's similar to Facebook's Clash of Clans, but set in space and has much more interesting combat system. The IAP is real.  The in-game timers are real, but this is still a hot game. What I have been wondering though is how much gameplay is lost in translation to the iOS.  VEGA is not your typical Facebook game.  Sure you have to sit around and wait on timers and micro manage your space town.  The town, to me, isn't really where the game takes place. It's kind of more like an extended UI for the best part of the game, the combat. You get to outfit and pilot a fleet of ships with a very simple interface that has some surprising depth and a high level of skill needed to master.

When you aren't dog fighting, you will be improving your stuff.  New ships, base components and upgrades are all researchable but the upgrading process is pretty restrictive. Any building you choose to upgrade must finish before you can upgrade another, so you might be stuck for a few hours if you end up choosing the wrong building upgrade. The ultimate goal for this game is to level up your base and your star ships, take down bigger and badder enemies, develop better weapons and armor, and basically just be the baddest dude or dudette in the universe.

A large part of this game is building and maintaining Alliances with other players. This is primarily a multiplayer game and, just like Clash of Clans, you can assault enemy bases to steal resources and try to ruin someone's day. The really nice part of this is that your building times can be reduced a bit with a simple tap to request aid and your Alliance buddies can tap on your request to join in. There are no restrictions on how much help you can offer. It serves primarily as an incentive to be a part of an active Alliance.

I mentioned my curiosity on how well the port would be handled. On the surface, the game looks and sounds really cool. The touch interface in combat functions admirably. After some research, however, I am not sure the touch controls can really hold up to the precision the desktop version provides. This would be less of an issue except that everyone plays together – iTunes, Android, and desktop versions all intermingle. I fear that when it comes to dog fighting, the mobile users are going to end up getting the short end of the stick.

In my opinion it is a small concession that must be paid in order to play away from a desktop, but bear in mind that this means that if you go full bore into this game, expect to eventually switch to a mouse and keyboard for some of the tougher stuff. One big side effect from this is that if you are just joining in, there are going to be a lot of people further ahead than you. I haven't had too much of a problem due to this, but someone starting out is not going to be anywhere near the front of the power or leveling curve.

Ultimately, I think VEGA Conflict is a mixed bag that some gamers could take umbrage over certain design decisions. My personal opinion is that it's a free to play game that doesn't keep you from doing the fun stuff, and it's an improvement on an established formula. If you've made it this far through the review and haven't been triggered by the normal free to play stuff, VEGA Conflict is probably for you, go grab it and I'll see you out there.

Welcome to Vanguard Command

0

Friends, officers, esteemed guests and diplomats,

Welcome to Vanguard Command.

Trying Times

The Trek community has been ailing for some time. While our previous community, Federation Command stood as a bastion of resolve and professionalism we were on borrowed time.

In an age of Steam sales and direct downloads, our golden era roots in Trek
gaming are simply unsustainable for a gaming community.

Star Trek

Enter Vanguard Command.

The essence of community is not in the games they play but in the bonds
they share and that spirit will never die.

It just needed a new home.

Welcome to a New Dawn

As of June 18th Vanguard Command will launch. A responsive site powered by
Wordpress and vBulletin with Steam and social integration. This community
will provide content and an atmosphere that will carry our Trek influences
through into new titles such as the eagerly anticipated Star Citizen.

Star Citizen

Everyone is welcome at this community and nothing is expected. Simply
registering makes you part of something bigger.

For existing FC officers, it's a fresh start, for old faces, it's a
contemporary hangout.

My promise to you is to provide an evolving community. A space where we develop ourselves creatively and organically. Building bonds of friendship and community in some of the decade's most prominent game titles.

Thank you. We'll see you out there.

Moving Forward: Release Candidate 3

The first day of Vanguard Command has come and gone and while it may not have been introduced to the spectacular fanfare I expected, to quote Costello: "Rome was not built in a day." However, throughout the day today the Phoenix Development Team has been monitoring your behavioral patterns and how you use the Vanguard Command site to see what we can improve on. Furthermore, with input from people like Bailo, we have also heard some feedback to the prematurely launched Community Nexus.

As Forum Lead I am going to take the time to address people's concerns as best I can and I encourage each of you to continue blogging and posting your comments and suggestion. Remember, Vanguard Command is unlike its predecessor: we are building it from the ground up with a community focus and with that there are some changes abound.

On the Subject of Moving Forward

As Costello mentioned in the formal welcome post to Vanguard Command, the Star Trek gaming community has been ailing for years and our golden roots in the Trek era have long since past.

Moving ForwardAn Intrepid-class starship with two destinations to choose from. Credit: Unknown

When we ventured out on Project Phoenix we literally had two paths we could follow: the one that Federation Command did and build a "clan" or roll the dice on building not just a "clan" but a gaming community. The latter made more sense considering most of Federation Command knew each other for years we weren't just "fleetmates" anymore - we were a family.

So we chose the second path and I doubt any of us will have regrets but we will have to learn as we truly travel into the unknown.

Release Candidate 2

In the lower right hand corner of the Vanguard Command Community Nexus you'll notice version information - a holdover from the days of the United Federation of Planets and Federation Command. Right now, we're running Release Candidate 2 (RC2). You may be asking yourself, "why aren't we running a finalized version of the site?" That would be a good question.

Truthfully, we ran into trouble near the end - trouble as in everything collapsing in on us. So we weren't able to finish everything and were forced to launch the Community Nexus in an unfinished state.

Some Caveats

The first person to point out any issues was Bailo in a blog that you can find here. He does address some very good points which I'm going to answer here.

Firstly, the Chatbox. How many of you all would like to see it only on the Forum Home? That's an easy fix if you all want it. FYI: did you also know you can expand the Chatbox to a full screen page and have real-time instant messaging conversations with others?

Second was about closing all the forum bars (the Categories) by default. There are a lot of them - a lot more than Federation Command ever had. However, this is never going to happen. It prevents search engines from indexing the site - counterproductive to say the least.

Thirdly, if you are one of the lucky ones to already have your Rank and Wing Echelon assigned to you and visited your profile you'll notice they are lowercase and one word when you view their text. That's a limitation of the underlying technology driving it and can't be helped. The reality is however, no one is actually going to take a look at that - most will see the images next to each and every post you make on the Community Nexus.

Finally, Bailo brought up the most important point of all: there's a  lot of things to do on the forums whether that be something as simple as blogging, watching Twitch, or creating Competitions. It will take a lot of getting used to - it's been a decade since UFP and is to be expected. Vanguard Command is a paradigm shift from our roots and will take getting used to.

Release Candidate 3

I am not making any promises here as the investment into developing the forums has taken a lot of time but the goal is to push out Release Candidate 3 (RC3) on Sunday which among other things will include the Elite Dangerous forums.

ED_StarFuelScooping

Of course, there's a few other things I'm hoping will be implemented by Release Candidate 3 (RC3):

  • Live Forum Search
  • User Ranks and Wings Echelon
  • Name Changes for those Who Requested One
  • Forum Viewing Permissions
  • Users to the right Usergroups

Three items may be delayed until Release Candidate 4 (RC4) which will hopefully be the final development version. As a special bonus I will share the crown jewel of RC4 with you today: Facebook Connect. It is literally ready as of this evening but a few logistics will delay it until we can push out RC4.

To quote Costello, "the work will never be done" but with RC4 I believe Vanguard Command will be in a good position to start reaching out to former contacts and make new friends.

If you haven't already, join our Steam Group and Star Citizen Organization as they will play an important role in the future of Vanguard Command. Also, don't forget to link your Steam account!

On behalf of the Phoenix Project Development Team I want to thank you all for your patience as we move forward.

Welcome to Vanguard Command

Been holding off on the starter package buy? Not particularly better off, lazy or just down right 'cheap'. Now is the time.

With this code - "GAMESCOM2015" you're able to download Arena Commander and see what all the fuss is about.
link - Down the Bottom.

Take note of a few things if you do. Arena Commander is in Alpha and is a crumb of the final game. These crumbs refereed to as 'modules' show the direction of the game they're building. So unrelated are these modules from the final product that the game will be a different experience altogether. It's hard to wrap your head around it but the scope of this game is why it has attracted all the egg heads. It's one of the reasons why its tipped to be the most ambitious game yet.

What is Star Citizen?
Dubbed a "First Person Universe" by a growing number in the company. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) wants the player to make their way in the most engaging and detailed space sim in development. Going beyond the confines of its promised single player space epic - Squadron 42. This project sets its sights on creating a new life where the player may engage in a myriad of profession and experiences. All at a time when man holds dominion over the stars.

A living, breathing universe bursting with vitality. Challenging even Bioware's crown. You may think it to be safe but all things give way to determination. The man who started it all, Chris Roberts. Is determined to see his dream realised to say nothing of the company's passion for the project. It is for this reason that they'll succeed. But the completion of this mammoth task cannot be a race.

It'll never release!

The development has its detractors. They claim that development is 'too slow' and believe it to herald a bad omen. Consider the disappointment when a game company hasn't taken the time to develop your most anticipated game. Day one, debilitating issues saw Rocksteady's - Arkham Knight in the grips of its own asylum. A whirlwind of backlash as top hardware choked under the weight of its premature release. The situation was so dire that even Nvidia offered help. The game was pulled from sale and relaunched much improved but the damage was needless and quite preventable.

The take away here? Take your time.

We've not begun to scratch the surface. Use "GAMESCOM2015" and redeem your chance to glimpse a modern virtual marvel in the making. As the project rolls along in defiance of fickle criticism while adhering to its pledge. You'll come to see Star Citizen as the beginning of a new era in professional games development.

New Beginnings with a Gaming Focus

Fellow Vanguardians!

Following the member base meeting on TeamSpeak, my prevailing impression is one of opportunity taken and opinions voiced in the most democratic of fashions. There are many clans out there who hold the collective thought of its members dear, but it can absolutely not surpass or compare with our most glorious, inexhaustible, irrepressible and exuberant Vanguard Command.

You have asked the Council of Vanguard Command to look at our current organisational structure and the way in which we portray ourselves as a community. Given your considerable input, we have justified the strong and unusual measures which we thought it necessary to take. No longer do we see ourselves as the successor to the United Federation of Planets [UFP] or Federation Command [FC], with its rigorous divisions, departments and structure, but instead we now pursue a path of gaming-fellowship.

It's therefore that we have simplified our structure. The Senate and Vice-Presidency will be abolished, the ranking-tier will consist of regular members, commanders of departments whom together form a supreme executive and directorial assembly and a president who will serve as the first among equals. Furthermore, the Office of Propaganda and the Department of Diplomacy will be merged.

It’s henceforth that we shall be a community of absolute gamers. We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither this sudden shock of change, nor the long road ahead will wear us down, because in the end we shall cheerfully and confidently take on these changes, thinking only of the enjoyment of gaming and our vital needs in life. Give us a game, and we will play!

Onwards and upwards!

Pick a cardinal point and all is quiet on the Excalibur front.

We've all toyed with the idea by now that development is in limbo. We've made peace with any impeding announcement of its end and so doing we put to rest any hope - but the box snaps shut just in time and we're treated to a resurgence!

Explosions in Star Citizen

Star Citizen to feature dynamic explosions.

The gotcha moment - Another opponent engulfed in an explosion of firework's that puts form to your exultation. Those few seconds of delight won't last and you're wanting more so assuming an encore will do you set off to find yourself another victim.

The assumption is understandable. A repeat of the same might scratch an itch but the real payoff never comes. One more opponent isn't enough but a better display with just a pinch of legitimacy for that extra helping of satisfaction will do.

Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 & Squadron 42 stole the show at CitizenCon 2015 with a two hour live stream showing off Foundry 42's progress for the single player space epic and a demo of Star Citizen Alpha 2.0

Fly Free Promotion till 25th October 2015 - Details Below

Squadron 42:
Star Citizen won't happen for a while yet and for good reason - It wasn't first. Squadron 42 was at the top of the list with succeeding stretch goals building to an expansion of it to the MMO universe we're all familiar - Star Citizen. The single player epic has undergone development since the beginning and has only just finished three movie lengths worth of dialogue via motion capture at Imaginarium studios in the UK. In it we see Gary Oldman and Mark Strong take centre stage in Squadron 42 assuring the bar for quality during the single player campaign is met.

New Star Trek TV Series Online

On 2 November 2015, there's been a lot of chatter about a new Star Trek TV series on CBS's All Access website.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Nothing else has been confirmed, so we'll keep this post updated as more information is released throughout the year.

The New Star Citizen trailer for Alpha 2.0

Star Citizens development is often complimented by lengthy design documents, written by producers and their staff and usually on a monthly release. Videos sourced from studios around the world, with introductions to new employees, content updates, bug fixing; Interviews with key personnel in a general style but also in the flavour of a Ten for the xxxxx segment, with either Chris Roberts, familiar producers, writers and a panel of senior designers, answering ten questions from the community. Formal and informal interviews with Youtube personalities and the team itself, reddit AMA's, as well as convention appearances all over world. On and on, a stream of information to keep us well informed.

Star Citizen is not without it's critics. Enter Derek Smart, of 3000AD. A cynic, Derek Smart would have you buy into the idea that it's all a big con and that Star Citizen is a mirage, which affords him a neat segway to peddle his own product, of which he does. His twitter is all a flutter with suggestions of funds mismanagement, citing the affluence in the lifestyle of Chris Roberts as an indication that he and his wife - Sandi Gardner (VP of Marketing for Star Citizen), are both rorting the pledges.

However, both are educated and have provided for themselves through savvy investments, amongst other things. The Roberts may not be living like Saudi princes but nor are they on struggle street, they've got on with their lives.
How anyone could read into that, and from it, mangle and conjure up a fraud is beyond the pale. Derek Smart, holder of two PhD's fished from a weeties packet, who's current game, as he would have you believe, competes with Star Citizen; Is no stranger to a cloud around his own crown, making what you could loosely refer to as 'games' for over a decade with notorious over promising and under delivering. You probably haven't played them, and i'll leave it to you to decide if you'd like to put money down for his latest... accomplishment.

Line of Defense. Star Citizen's competition.

Star Citizen may well be a waiting game, but perhaps, well worth the wait.
